How do we see ourselves and feel inside our bodies? Is the image that we have in our mind realistic or is the perception of our appearance distorted and inaccurate? I am focusing on a negative image of my own body – imperfect, shattered and distorted as it is. The way I see myself in the mirror.
Imperfect edges of dark glass, organic shapes and perforations evoke feelings of anxiety, insecurity and vulnerability which are main negative body-related emotions. Furthermore, the reflective glass surface acts as a mirror, confronting the viewer with a distorted vision of themself. At the same time, transparency of the glass allows a look through, to the other, more mysterious side. At first glance, it seems as if the organic shapes and perforations are purely abstractions and are randomly allocated, yet there is a further hidden meaning underneath. Unidentifiable forms depict myself – the harshly distorted body that I find hard to accept.
The work was displayed at the Summer Expo as part of the group exhibition Transparency of Colours in GlazenHuis, Belgium. It was also exhibited at Winter Art Semestra 2022 at UMPRUM in Prague.
